What is focus?
Focus is the ability to gather and direct your attention. The more focused you are, the more successful you will be. It applies to things you do, be it academic achievement, athletic performance, work results, skill acquisition, etc. In the modern era, focus and concentration is available in short supply.
There are lot of ways to improve your ability, your focus and, sharpen your attention. “Stay focused and stay determined. Don’t look at anyone else to be your determination, have self-determination. It will take you very far”.
“Concentration”, we were never taught how to concentrate, and we don’t practice concentration. How can we do something if we were never taught? How can we be good at something if, we do not practice it?
There are 2 important aspects of concentration
- The mind
We allow people to take us from one area of mind to another area of the mind. Your awareness can travel around the mind through various sections. There is a section for anger, jealousy, for food, for happiness, etc. One should develop the awareness on one thing, for an extended period.
Let us check on few ways to build unwavering focus
Improve your focus by doing one thing at a time, the art of concentration is, keeping your awareness, that ball of light, on one thing for an extended period. The way to practice concentration, is keeping our awareness where we want it to be. It is doing one thing at a time throughout the day. When you are talking to someone, keep your awareness on that person only.
Improve your focus by practicing Pre-commitment, once you have identified your mission, the task you are going to work on, how long is it going to take, do not let the focus go away from you. Do not let other things to take your focus away.
Build up your focus muscles, you should start out small, when you are building up the focusing muscles. If you are handling a task, focus on it for 5 minutes and then, take a 2 minutes break, then again start focusing for another 5 minutes. This way you will build up your focus muscles.
Identify the potential distractions ahead of time, before you start your work, think of all the things that would distract you. Turn off your cell phone, it will not distract you, sit somewhere in the corner, so that other people cannot find you, stay away from watching social media sites. Meditation is important to improve the focus, meditation is a better way to control the brain regions, who are responsible for pulling our focus away, when we are trying to concentrate on something.
Get into the habit of saying a “No”, to improve your focus, learn to say “no”. If you are working on something, concentrate on that, do not get distracted by the good coming to you. It is said “That good, is the enemy of great”.
Improve your focus by taming your monkey mind, sometimes it is within us, the voice in your head, that distracts you, weakens your thoughts. To tap the monkey mind, one should practice mindfulness, when your mind wanders, use your breath, to bring the attention back to the task.
Take regular breaks, to improve your focus, while doing a task, we need to take breaks, so that we can return to our original task, and focus on it once again.
Cultivate your focus with deep work, do work that demands more focus, and intense concentration for longer period. It allows you to learn new skills, deeper work gives your life meaning and produces value.
